Ingredients

4 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, plus more for greasing

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

Prepare the pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter and set aside.

Make the caramel sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the 1/2 cup of butter. Once melted, stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour this caramel mixture into the bottom of the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.

Arrange the apples: Neatly layer the sliced apples on top of the caramel mixture. You can create a decorative pattern that appeals to you! Set aside.

Mix the dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.

Cream the sugars: In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar and the remaining 1/2 cup of softened butter. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Add eggs and vanilla: Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then stir in the vanilla extract.

Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry mixture to the creamed mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined. Do not overmix.

Pour the batter: Carefully spoon the batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Bake the cake: Bake in preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and flip: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then run a knife around the edges to loosen and carefully invert it onto a serving plate. Remove the pan to reveal the beautiful caramel apple topping.

Serve: Slice and serve warm, drizzled with any remaining caramel from the pan and perhaps a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
